Elk
Hunting in Alberta Canada
Alberta
elk hunts
Elk hunting takes place
in mid October during the tailend of the rut in the Rocky
Mountains next to Banff National Park. The country is rugged
and does not lend itself to elk hunting any other way but
on foot or horseback. Elk hunting on horseback allows you
to reach locations that are not accessible by vehicle which
means better chances of seeing more trophy elk. Horseback
elk hunting is the preferred method of hunting because we
can cover more ground, however we can access our hunting area
by boat and then hunt on foot for those who are not comfortable
on horses. Many non-migratory herds of elk are scattered throughout
this area. We will be hunting the rich pastures of large mountain
meadows, pine and aspen forests, and along rivers and streams
where the elk live. This is a prime hunting location with
low hunting pressure. Alberta is the place to hunt when it
comes to trophy elk.
We ususally hunt in the early morning and late afternoon,
when the herds are most active. We will do some calling (bugling
and cow calls) while hunting feeding areas, looking for scrapes
and listening for bugling bulls. We have found this to be
the best time to spot & stalk trophy elk. Our elk hunting
area is managed for trophy bulls with a minimum six point
rule in effect. Several exceptional bulls are taken each year
in this region. The average antler size of the bulls 315"
B.C., with the bigger end scoring 350"+ B.C. The success
rate on our elk hunts is 75%. This is primarily an elk hunt
but we can add a whitetail deer, mule deer or wolf to the
hunt.
